Life Through My Eyes

Reuben’s Nursery

July 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Well, Reuben will be 4 months old on Monday and I just finished hanging everything in his nursery.  I was on a roll with decorating and getting things organized and had most of the nursery done but then I got put on bed rest for 3 weeks.  The combination of a Type A (slightly obsessive compulsive) personality and the nesting that comes with being pregnant drove me crazy.  Poor Nick…I know he had to demonstrate a lot of patience with me during that time.  I’m sure it was very difficult for him to understand why I couldn’t just take advantage of the time off and relax.  ANYWAY…1st the bed rest, THEN Reuben came along, THEN the 10 days in the NICU, THEN surviving with a newborn, THEN finishing my Masters, THEN, THEN, THEN…  Those are all of my excuses for whatever they’re worth; however, I finally finished the last few details and I’m finally getting the chance to post some pictures.  I always love seeing pictures of nurseries so I’m excited to share Reuben’s with you!

This is the adorable “BABY” sign that Rachel made me for Christmas.  (Don’t worry.  The letters are hanging straight I just took the picture crooked ;) )

I ordered this verse from Uppercase Living and spray painted the framing black.  Hanging this was a MAJOR labor of love from my Mom and Rachel.  I felt helpless as I sat and watched.  Rachel said that she’s going to order a huge verse for her future nursery and declare herself on bedrest so I can hang one for her ;)

Reading with Mommy

July 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

I love reading with Reuben.  Throughout my Bachelors, Masters, and 5 years of teaching, I have learned about and observed the tremendous impact of literacy in the home.  I know that reading with Reuben has many benefits, but mostly I just love this quality time with my little man.  On this particular day, Reuben was thoroughly enjoying story time.  He screamed and kicked throughout the whole book :)

Reuben’s 1st Trim

June 17, 2009 · 1 Comment

Reuben was born with a head full of hair and it just keeps getting longer!  Nick and I are in agreement that we’re not quite ready for the first REAL haircut but Reuben had some serious wispies above his ear that desperately needed to be trimmed.  So…we swung by Studio 2 today to visit Miss Liz and Miss Heather!  Liz gave Reuben a little trim while Heather entertained him and took pictures.  He did such a great job sitting still and staying in a good mood.  I think he might have even been flirting a little with the pretty ladies :)  Here are some pics:

Before pic with MAJOR wild hair action above either ear:

3 Months Old

June 13, 2009 · 1 Comment

My little boy is 3 months old today!  I can’t believe it’s already been 3 months, yet his birthday feels like an eternity ago.  Reuben is such a huge part of our lives now.  He brings us so much JOY.  He has developed quite the personality and has been talking A LOT.  His best friend is the ceiling fan…he can hardly look away when there is one around.  He’s been trying to roll over the last couple of days but he gets stuck about half way.  When holding him, he likes to be up on your shoulder so he can hold his head up and look around.  He LOVES to listen to praise and worship at church but starts to fuss during the sermon (sorry, Pastor Mike).  I’m so proud of my little man and so incredibly THANKFUL for the opportunity to stay home with him for these first months of his life.  Okay, here are the pics:

On this particular day, Reuben woke up screaming from a nap.  Nick changed his diaper and Reuben peed all over his outfit.  Nick just brought Reuben to me in a diaper to eat.  He ate like he hadn’t eaten in days.  As soon as he was done, he let out a huge belch and then passed out.  I just wrapped him up in a blanket and let him sleep naked in his swing.  Typical male…

7 Things About Me

June 3, 2009 · 1 Comment

My friend, Allison, tagged me to share seven random things about myself.  She suggested that because we’re so much alike, I could potentially just copy and paste her seven things; however, much to my surprise, there is only 1 item that I can copy and paste.  It will be the 1st featured in my list of seven.

1. Im a walking paradox. I love a clean house, organized closets, sparkling car, and immaculate purse. Unfortunately, I am inherently a very messy person. I have a very hard time disciplining myself to keep things picked up and organized every moment of the day. Instead, I allow things to get out of control quickly, get completely stressed out about it, and then go on a cleaning rampage. Seriously, walking into my messy house physically affects me–the muscles in my neck tighten, I clench my jaw and the beginnings of a stress headache are born. Why, oh why, can’t I make things easier on myself and just stay on top of things?!

2. I’m obsessed with reality TV. It’s really becoming a problem.  I think the reason I love reality TV so much more than TV dramas or comedies is that I feel I can connect with the people in the show because they are “real.”  Please understand, I’m fully aware that the level of reality is somewhat skewed for the public eye, but I love the idea that the shows are about real people with real lives and there is a potential, although very small, that I could run into them at the local grocery store.  The problem is this…I’m absolutely devastated when things don’t work out the way I want them to.  For example, I mourned the divorce of Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey and cried myself to sleep after the season 5 premiere of Jon & Kate Plus 8.  It’s pitiful…I know.

3. I’m not crafty unless I can copy.  I love to do arts and crafts.  I love making things for my house or making unique gifts to give to other people.  The only problem is…I have NO creativity in the arts and crafts area.  I can only make things if I’ve seen them done before.  I’m NOT the type of person that can see a drawer full of crafty junk and throw something together.  I was the kid in art class that made my project look exactly like the teacher’s example.

4. I have a love/hate relationship with my independence.  There are times when I can take care of things on my own and it makes me feel very proud of my independence.  For example, last semester I took 2 classes @ Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.  There were 4 weekends that I flew to Houston, rented a car, drove to Beaumont, stayed in a hotel, went to class, drove back to Houston, and flew home.  I felt very thankful that I was able to do that with confidence.  BUT I sometimes feel bitter about my process toward gaining independence.  You see, my dad chose me as his personal project.  When he started to realize that I was a lot like him, he started expecting me to do everything that he could do.  I do appreciate some of the life lessons but some of them I could have lived without.  Here are some examples of how my dad forced me in to independence (sidenote:  I rip on my dad about this all the time and he thinks it’s funny.  I have already shared this with him and he BEGGED me to put it on my blog so DON’T feel bad for him.)

  • He made me start having a personal quiet time/devotional before I could read and start taking sermon notes before I could write.
  • He made me call to order pizza for the whole family every Friday.
  • He always elected me as the one to run back in and get more packets of ketchup.
  • He made me start using Quicken as soon as I opened up a checking account.
  • He made me shovel snow and mow the yard while my two sisters, Rachel and Shannon, relaxed indoors.
  • He made me help him build any newly purchased piece of furniture.
  • He made me pay a car payment to him every month to pay for my own car.
  • He made me get a “real” job at 16.  I started babysitting at 13 (to pay for church camp).
  • He always made me pay half of my way to go to church camp so I would appreciate the experience more since I had invested my own money into it.

5. I hate summer weather.  As a teacher, I obviously love the summer because it’s 2-3 months of free vacation BUT I hate summer because of the weather.  There is nothing worse than taking a shower and after finishing the getting ready process feeling like you need another one because you’re sweating so much.  The humidity is terrible and I just can’t enjoy being outside in the heat.  I’m already counting down the days to brisk, cool breeze and hoodies.

6. I get bored very easily. I have a very hard time sitting still for extended periods of time.  My mind is constantly racing and thinking of my current to-do lists.  I have had to learn to carry a planner or a notepad with me to jot down my thoughts or lists so that I can focus on other things.  The easiest way for me to watch a movie or a TV show is while I’m working on a project.  If I’m not doing something, it is highly likely that I’ll fall asleep.

7. I love people but meeting them or being in large crowds intimidates me.  I love a party or a reason to hang out with my friends but I have to totally gear myself up when going into a situation in which I’ll have to meet or mingle with new people.  I become very nervous about saying the right thing or coming across the right way.  Funny…once I get to know people, I seem to lose all those inhibitions.

Now, I’m supposed to tag 7 friends to participate in this exercise on their blogs.

1. My husband, Nick: Your blog needs some interesting information about you.

2. Jodi: You’re a kindred spirit, I suspect you might be able to copy and paste some of mine ;)

3. Karen L.: There is always random stuff to be learned about you!

4. Karen S.:  I feel like you need a great reason to update your blog :)

5. Heather :  You also need a good reason to update your blog!

6.  Jen:  You inspire me when you write.  I’ll be depending on this blog when you leave T-Town!

7.  Becca:  I love reading your blog!  Your description of life with 2 little ones cracks me up!

Easter

May 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Easter Sunday was Reuben’s first time to go to church and my first time back in a LONG time.  He got all dressed up in his linen khaki pants, blue polo, and argyle sweater vest.  The service was AMAZING and Reuben loved hearing his daddy lead worship.  After church, we went to lunch at my parents and then headed over to Nick’s parents for Reuben’s big debut for the extended family.  Here are some pics from the special day:

Reuben’s Reflection

May 19, 2009 · 6 Comments

It has become our routine that while I take a shower and get ready for the day, Reuben hangs out in his papasan seat.  Reuben’s papasan has an extension with a mirror on it that comes up from the side and over his head.   Today I noticed that Reuben was paying attention to his reflection and he was actually quite enjoying it!  I grabbed my camera and was fortunate enough to catch a video.  About 15 seconds in, you’ll notice him see his reflection and get really happy.

Graduation

May 19, 2009 · 1 Comment

Tonight I graduated from NSU-BA as a Master of Education with an emphasis in Reading.  Upon the completion of one more independent study class this summer and the passing of the certification test (to be taken in July), I will be officially certified as a Reading Specialist.  So…if you know of any student who needs a little extra help with reading, send them my way!  I absolutely LOVED the Reading program at NSU-BA.  I would recommend it to ANY teacher.  I learned SO many strategies that were easy to apply immediately in my classroom.  The professors in this program are WONDERFUL and so SUPPORTIVE.    The graduation ceremony was terribly BORING and LONG but my family and Nick’s family were very gracious and stayed for the whole thing.

Lyrics Photo Shoot

May 16, 2009 · 1 Comment

Our  good friend, Nicci, with Lyrics Photography came to our house last night to do a photo shoot of our little family.  Reuben Mac did so well!  He stayed awake for a long time and only started to fuss toward the end.  I’m SO thankful for a gifted photographer that has captured such priceless moments!  These 2 pictures are a couple of my favorites.  Check Nicole’s blog to see a few others!  If you have any type of event coming up, BOOK HER!

Baby Showers

May 15, 2009 · 1 Comment

We have been so blessed by our friends, families, and coworkers with gifts, meals, and LOTS of encouragement and support.  Throughout my pregnancy, birth, and first few months of Reuben’s life, we have had need for nothing.  Thank you, Lord, for lining our lives with these AMAZING people that share in the joy of Reuben Mac’s life!

Some of my wonderful friends from Destiny hosted a baby shower for Reuben.  It was originally scheduled for March 14th; however, Reuben Mac decided to come early on March 13th so the ladies went into action and rescheduled the shower for April 4th.  It was really fun to be able to bring Reuben with me to the shower because it was his first chance to meet some of our dear friends from church.  He slept the entire time but looked cute as ever :)  Here are some pictures from the special day:

Nick’s office at Deloitte also hosted a shower for us.  The shower happened to be while I was on bed rest but I got permission from my doctor to attend.  It was a wonderful opportunity to get out of the house and meet some of Nick’s coworkers.
