Delightfully Inspiring Thursday: Homemade Laundry Detergent

I’ve been tackling my laundry room as my next big organization project, but I’m not quite finished.  So…I though I’d share with you a mini project within my bigger project 😉  I’ve been seeing several homemade cleaners all over Pinterest and decided I wanted to try out the detergent since I’m on a laundry room kick.  I feel like we go through laundry detergent so quickly around here, so I’m really excited about this opportunity to save some money!  I followed THIS tutorial that makes enough detergent for approximately 9 months.

Supplies:

  • One 4 lb box of Borax — $3.38
  • One 4 lb box of Baking Soda — $2.12
  • One 4 lb box of Super Washing Soda — $3.24
  • 3 bars Fels-Naptha soap — $.97 each
  • 2 containers Oxi Clean (approx 3.5 lb total) $3.86 each
  • TOTAL COST = $19.37
*I was able to find all of these ingredients in the detergent aisle at Super Wal-Mart.*
Use your cheese grater or food processor to grate the 3 bars of Fels-Naptha.  I shredded one bar, added it to the bucket, added about 1/3 of each of the other ingredients, and then repeated the process.  This way I was sort of mixing as I went.
I lined a large bucket with a trash bag.  Once all of the ingredients were added, I held the top of the bag closed, removed it from the bucket, and used my hand (on the outside of the bag) to mix the ingredients around.
Finally, I added my detergent to this glass jar that I got at Target for about $15.  I used my Cameo to cut the vinyl lettering to label the jar.  I use my Oxi-Clean scoop to take out the detergent.  You only need to use one scoop per load of laundry.

I’ve done 2 loads of laundry so far and I’m happy with the way it’s working.  I’ll let you know if I have any problems!

I’m wondering what you used to store the detergent that didn’t fit into the glass jar?

Hi Chatel: All of the detergent fit in the glass container with plenty of room to spare, so I didn’t have to worry about storing anything.

  2. […] The next thing I did was make my first batch of homemade laundry detergent which I posted about HERE. […]

So far I’ve been really happy with it! A friend of mine made a dry detergent that didn’t have Oxi-Clean and said she felt her whites were getting a little dingy (spell?) after awhile. So far I haven’t noticed that at all. I think maybe the Oxi-Clean makes the difference?? Also, I put the detergent in, let the water run a little bit, and then add my clothes.

This is my weekend project, How do you like this?
Do you think I can buy vinyl letters @ Hobbly Lobby?

So far I’ve been really happy with it! I’ve heard people say that after using it for awhile, their whites started to not look as crisp, but the recipe I used added Oxi Clean and it seems to make the difference.
Yes, I’m pretty sure you can buy vinyl lettering at Hobby Lobby. If you have trouble, let me know. I can hook you up 🙂
